“Reinvent yourself” is a popular mantra. Jean Titus lived it.
The former investment adviser began building his own ventures after the 2008 downturn. Then his mother died, and a chance meeting with a former pro athlete made him realize his fitness had slipped below his own standards.
“I started getting serious about this when I realized I wasn’t doing my best, and I wanted to do better,” he recalls. “I didn’t know what that meant exactly, but I knew I could go out every day and just keep pushing it.”
Then came a beach vacation. One of his daughters snapped a shirtless photo of him and posted it, and it went viral. “I don’t even like to have my picture taken,” he says. “But after that happened, I noticed that people were paying attention.”
They still are. Known online as “Ripped Grandpa,” Titus now has appeared in Muscle & Fitness and Men’s Health, and wrote a book titled “Unlimited.” But he says his feed is about more than physique: “It’s not just pictures of myself with my shirt off.” A healthy lifestyle, he says, involves more than lifting weights.
“I didn’t say, ‘I’m too old; that’s too difficult.’ Those things didn’t enter into my mind.” That’s the approach he wants people to have, especially in their 50s.
